all times in UTC - please check your timezone
Program 23 November 2020
14:00 - 15:30 Introductory talks on science topics
The aim of this session is to inform about science topics of relevance for NAWDIC that were identified in the NAWDIC-Wiki-survey. The short enlightening talks (12+3 minutes) will cover the scientific questions and needs for additional observations.
- 14:00 - 14:20: Status of the NAWDIC idea (Julian Quinting and Christian Grams, KIT)
- 14:20 - 14:35: Dry Intrusions (Shira Raveh-Rubin, Weizmann Institute of Science)
- 14:35 - 14:50: Tropopause structure (Annika Oertel, KIT and Ben Harvey, Univ. Reading)
- 14:50 - 15:05: Downstream HIW (Florian Pantillon, Laboratoire d'Aerologie, France and Manos Flaounas, HCMR Greece)
- 15:05 - 15:20: ECMWF operational needs (Linus Magnusson, ECMWF)
15:20 - 15:50 General discussion
Time to discuss, in the plenum, topics not covered yet and to continue the discussion on the individual topics covered in the introductory talks.
15:50 - 16:00 Break
16:00 - 17:00 Breakout session 1: Scientific goals
The breakout groups will deepen the discussion on the individual science topics. We will assign participants according to the indicated interests at registration. Each group shall deliver 1-3 clearly formulated scientific goals/questions. Feedback on the outcome of the breakout groups will be given on the next day.
- Group A: Dry Intrusions - planetary boundary layer and air-sea interaction (Chairs: Franziska Aemisegger and Gwendal Rivière)
- Group B: Tropopause dynamics (Chairs: Andrea Lang and Ben Harvey)
- Group C: High-impact weather and predictability (Chairs: James Doyle and Jennifer Catto)
17:00 - 17:30 Lessons learned from NAWDEX (George Craig, LMU, Munich and Heini Wernli, ETH Zurich)
The speakers will comment on challenges and pitfalls during the planning, conduction, and post-campaign analysis of NAWDEX. We welcome feedback and experiences from other campaigns.
Program 24 November 2020
14:00 - 14:30 Feedback from breakout groups & discussion
We will wrap up day 1 of the workshop and report back the scientific goals/questions formulated by the breakout groups.
14:30 - 16:00 Observational capabilities and international contributions
The planning of such an international collaboration is prone to a number of coordination issues and uncertainties of the individual contributions. The current global situations may complicate this further. In this session, we bring together information from the different groups that consider an aircraft contribution in order to sort out potential ways towards a joint mission, the planning horizon, and critical deadlines.
- 14:30 - 14:45: HALO (Andreas Schäfler, DLR, Germany)
- 14:45 - 15:00: FAAM (John Methven, University of Reading, UK)
- 15:00 - 15:15: SAFIRE (Gwendal Rivière, LMD, France)
- 15:15 - 15:30: AR RECON (Marty Ralph, Scripps, San Diego, USA)
- 15:30 - 15:45: NSF/NOAA (James Doyle, NRL, Monterey, USA)
- 15:45 - 16:00: Discussion & Break
16:00 - 16:30 Plenary discussion on coordination of international contributions
The purpose of this session is to further collect information on organizational matters of the involved international partners. Topics that may be covered are funding possibilities, the discussion of additional efforts such as ground-based observations, as well as networking to increase the visibility of NAWDIC in the respective national communities.
16:30 - 17:00 Breakout session 2: Observational capabilities
The discussion will continue in the breakout groups with a focus on linking the potential observational capabilities with the science topics that were discussed on day 1 of the workshop. This shall help to identify needs for the instrumentation and additional observation platforms and might unveil the benefit of specific collaborations.
17:00 - 17:15 Break / time for chairs to summarize outcome of breakout groups
17:15 - 18:00 Report from breakout groups of day 2 and final discussion
Here we have time to wrap-up the workshop and agree on next steps and further coordination of the NAWDIC efforts.
